Malin Sundgren
Senior Advisor – Protection, Prevention & Preparedness
International Humanitarian Law (IHL) & International Human Rights Law (IHRL)
About
I am an international lawyer and protection expert with over 18 years of experience working across Asia, Africa, the Middle East and Europe with organisations including the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), the United Nations and the Finnish Ministry for Foreign Affairs.
My work has focused on translating international human rights law (IHRL), international humanitarian law (IHL) and protection frameworks into practical strategies, policies and programmes that strengthen prevention, preparedness and accountability in conflict and crisis settings.
Throughout my career, I have advised governments, military, police, justice sector actors and humanitarian organisations on issues including protection of civilians, access to justice and detention systems, prevention of sexual and gender-based violence, community-based protection, and the national implementation of international legal standards.
In senior regional and global roles with the ICRC, I have led legal and policy engagement across Africa and Asia, coordinated multi- country teams, developed institutional guidance and training, and supported dialogue with states and security actors on compliance, prevention and institutional reform.
My approach combines legal expertise with extensive operational and field experience— bridging community-level realities with organisational and institutional readiness to develop practical, context-sensitive and protective solutions.
